Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts down to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
