Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
